Giardia is one of the most common intestinal infections in dogs, particularly sick / weak / immunocompromised animals. It is a protozoa that when left untreated causes bad and repeated diarrhoea.
Using the same rapid testing tech with which we are now all familiar (termed a sandwich lateral flow immunochromatographic assay!) this test provides a rapid and reliable detection of giardia in your dog's vomit or faeces.
A sample of the vomit / faeces is taken, mixed with the reagent and the treated sample is applied to the sample hole on the device. The liquid will laterally flow through the surface of the test strip and react with the pre-coated monoclonal antibodies on the surface of the test.
If there is giardia antigen in the specimen, a visible red line will appear in the T section.
These tests are expected to be more than 92% accurate if Giardia is present (studies here and here).
